"Over Before It Began" Press Release
Over Before It Began is the second single to be released by Suzy Winz, Susan Craig Winsberg's songwriting project, this time in the Blues/R&B genre. Co-produced by Jeff Miley, the song is performed by some of the top musicians in Los Angeles, and is sung to perfection by the inimitable Robbyn Kirmsée.
Suzy Winz is exploring the many faces of love through her songs. In her first song she praised compatibility and friendship in love. In stark contrast, the theme of this new song deals with rejection and frustration in romance, bringing our protagonist to tears.
The emotion in Robbyn's voice is visceral and intense, especially in the bridge and the extended tag, where she wails till you feel it in your bones; and her background vocals add a deep richness and excitement to the song. The band's performances are impeccable, with Scott Gilman's tenor sax solo in the middle standing out as a high point, and his bari sax licks adding a raw element that brings the theme home even more.
Louisiana native Shane Theriot's performance on guitar is stellar, with choice licks throughout that are truly memorable, while Edwin Livingston and Joel Taylor hold down the sultry, bluesy beat with incredible groove and power. All the while, the stirring Hammond organ of Zachary Provost fills out the texture and takes us on a journey where the blues are timeless.
The hook of the song is ironic and very catchy: "It was over before it began, I got stood up on a one-night stand." A lamentable situation indeed, and yet somehow a human experience that all too many of us can relate to, men and women alike. Ah, the vicissitudes of love!
